Aaron Judge's leadership missed as Yankees struggle without him
Aaron Judge's injury absence has left a noticeable gap in the New York Yankees' lineup and clubhouse, with teammate Cody Bellinger emphasizing the captain's leadership value. The Yankees have struggled since Judge last played on May 31, going 18-19 before winning five of their final seven games before the All-Star break.
Aaron Judge was placed on the injured list on June 5 after an MRI revealed a stress fracture in his right first rib. The Yankees captain has been sidelined since, with additional testing during the All-Star break determining whether he can increase baseball activities. An August return is currently considered possible.
Cody Bellinger, speaking ahead of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, highlighted Judge's influence in the Yankees' clubhouse. 'Both of those guys are so well-respected in our locker room. When they speak, we listen,' Bellinger said, referring to Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. The Yankees have missed their captain's presence, both on the field and in the locker room.
Giancarlo Stanton, another respected veteran, has also been sidelined since April 24 due to a right calf strain. He suffered a new strain in a different area of the same calf while running the bases, delaying his recovery. General manager Brian Cashman reported that Stanton has resumed running after receiving platelet-rich plasma injections.
The Yankees hope to regain not just the power but also the steadiness and accountability that Judge and Stanton provide. Their returns could be crucial as the team prepares for the second half of the American League East race. Bellinger's comments underscore the importance of having both veterans back in the lineup and locker room.
