Aaron Rodgers’ Steelers retreat builds unity ahead of 2025 season, ex-WR says

Aaron Rodgers and a group of his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates gathered in Wyoming on 18 June for a multi-day retreat that former Cincinnati Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh believes will smooth rough edges before the 2025 season.

Rodgers, quarterback Mason Rudolph and four wide receivers-DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Roman Wilson and a fourth unnamed player-spent days in the Rockies talking football, family and life outside the locker room. Houshmandzadeh, a 13-year NFL veteran who now hosts the “Speakeasy” podcast, called the trip “a lot of football talked at this retreat. It’s a lot of life, family, wives and loved ones.”

Houshmandzadeh argued the retreat defuses tension before it starts. “When I’m cool with you, I may be (frustrated), but I ain’t saying nothing,” he told “Speakeasy” on Tuesday. “(I’m just) like, ‘Bruh!’ You already know what that means. So that explosion, so to speak, won’t be there if that’s what y’all think we gonna do because of this retreat.” He added that bonding now means future blow-ups stay inside the huddle.

The group included Metcalf, a 27-year-old Pro Bowler who joined Seattle in 2022, and Pittman Jr., a 25-year-old Indianapolis Colts receiver who inked a three-year, $62 million deal in March. Roman Wilson, 23, was a healthy scratch late last season but didn’t lash out publicly-an attitude Houshmandzadeh credits to the off-field time.

What comes next for the Steelers?

Without George Pickens in the fold, Pittsburgh’s pass-catchers enter 2025 with fewer moving parts. The retreat gave the five receivers and two QBs a shared language before training camp. Houshmandzadeh predicts the group will stay in touch weekly even after the season: “When you get to know somebody, you treat them and you act differently because it’s not just football now.”

Mike McCarthy, the Steelers’ first-year coach, inherits a roster that finished 2024 9-8 and missed the playoffs. Rodgers, 41, has said he plans to play again in 2025 after missing most of 2023 with an Achilles tear.

The Wyoming trip wraps a quiet offseason for the Steelers, who added veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick but watched Pickens leave in free agency. With Rodgers and Rudolph at the controls, the wide-outs now carry extra responsibility-and extra chemistry built in the Rockies.
