Alex Albon Wins Dinner Bet After Monaco Tactics

2026-06-23 · Alex Albon · Match Report

Alex Albon finished 9th in the Monaco Grand Prix, apologizing for his team's tactics.

The Williams team exploited Monaco's circuit to hold up several drivers, including George Russell.

Russell grew frustrated and cut a chicane to pass Albon, receiving a drive-through penalty.

Albon wasn't proud of the team's tactics, saying "that was a very ugly race" on the onboard radio.

He finished behind Carlos Sainz, who placed 10th, on Sunday, May 28.

The Mercedes driver, George Russell, finished 11th.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff revealed that Williams team principal James Vowles texted him to apologize.

Vowles told Wolff, "I'm sorry, we had no choice."

Albon bought Russell dinner after the race, as Russell joked Albon "would definitely get the bill".

The Thai driver completed his two pit stops, swapping positions with Sainz.

Russell argued over the radio that the Williams pilot was driving erratically.

The Monaco Grand Prix was held on Sunday, May 28, with Albon finishing 9th.

Albon's team used the new regulations to their advantage, requiring two pit stops at Monaco.

The circuit's difficulty in producing overtakes helped the Williams team's tactics.

George Russell told reporters Albon would pay for dinner, according to ESPN's Laurence Edmondson.

The Williams team's defense was apologized for by James Vowles, the team principal.

Toto Wolff replied, "we know", after Vowles' apology.

The Monaco Grand Prix results showed Albon finishing 9th, with 2 pit stops completed.
