Alex Márquez clinches historic pole at German MotoGP on July 11, 2026

2026-07-11 · Alex Márquez · Match Report

Alex Márquez seized a landmark pole position at the German MotoGP on Saturday 11 July 2026, marking his 77th career pole and the first rider in history to hit that figure. The Catalan Ducati rider topped the grid at the Sachsenring, setting the stage for a potential record‑tying victory.

During the final qualifying session, Márquez posted the fastest lap, edging out his brother Marc by a narrow margin. The Ducati lock‑out of the front row-Fabio Di Giannantonio in third-underscored the team's dominance. Márquez’s lap time placed him 0.07 seconds ahead of the nearest challenger, confirming his status as the "King of the Ring" at this circuit.

Reaching 77 poles puts Márquez ahead of every other premier‑class rider ever. The achievement arrives as he prepares to chase his 13th win at the Sachsenring, a tally that would match Giacomo Agostini’s record for most victories on a single circuit. A win would also give him his tenth triumph at this venue, another historic benchmark.

Marc Márquez, Alex’s twin, qualified alongside him on the front row, creating a rare brotherly lock‑out. Fabio Di Giannantonio secured the third spot for Ducati. Aprilia’s Raul Fernández led the second row, while Takaaki Ogura and Fabio Quartararo completed it. Marco Bezzecchi posted the eighth‑fastest time, but an Aprilia rider suffered a wrist injury after a crash and retired to the pits.

Francesco Bagnaia, the reigning world champion, qualified only 11th, more than seven‑tenths of a second off the pole. His position suggests a challenging race ahead, especially with Ducati’s front‑row strength. If Márquez converts his pole into a win, he will equal Agostini’s dual records and cement his legacy at the Sachsenring.

The race is set for Sunday, 12 July 2026. Márquez will line up on the front row, looking to convert his qualifying pace into a decisive sprint. Team Ducati will focus on maintaining tyre temperature and managing fuel load, while rivals will aim to disrupt his rhythm. The outcome could reshape the championship leaderboard as the season heads into its final phases.
