Alex Márquez Reflects on German GP Crash: 'Maybe I Was Too Confident'

2026-07-13 · Alex Márquez · Club News

Alex Márquez took full responsibility for his crash at the German Grand Prix, citing overconfidence as a factor. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who qualified on the front row, finished second in the sprint despite not fully recovering from a collarbone injury. He explained that he made a small mistake trying to navigate two challenging corners at the Sachsenring circuit. 'I don't know. Honestly, I did a small mistake trying to... Maybe that T4 today was quite fast and I was maybe too confident in those two points, and I made that small mistake,' he said. 'It's true that the grip level was a little bit lower today and everything was more tricky. So, just that. I don't know if the wind had some effect there, but it was more of a mistake. It's true that I'm upset and quite sad with that crash, but I'm really happy with the overall weekend.'

Márquez's physical limitations played a role in his crash, as he admitted to being too stiff on the bike. 'In those corners, I don't help too much with the bike to turn. I'm too stiff on the bike, so I put too much weight on the front,' he explained. 'I think that also was a reason for the crash; that was a reason for the crash.' Despite these challenges, Márquez remains hopeful about his recovery. 'I will try. This is my target,' he said. 'Step by step, I'm close to my 100%. I hope that after the summer break in Silverstone, I will be at 100%-if not, surely later on.'

Márquez emerged as Marc Márquez's closest rival at the Sachsenring, where the factory Ducati rider stole the show with pole position and victory in both races. The Gresini rider missed out on pole position by 0.061s and finished Saturday’s sprint just 0.368s adrift of the reigning champion. Despite this, Márquez expressed confidence in his ability to pose a stronger challenge on Sunday. 'We were more or less at the same point as yesterday. He started quite relaxed and then he started to put his rhythm step by step,' he said. 'I was able to give him a small space, just for the front tyre to not overheat. But that training for me was really, really good. I was just trying to wait and trying to save the rear tyre.'

Márquez's next race is scheduled for Silverstone on 9 August, after a gap of four weekends. He remains optimistic about his performance and recovery. 'I will try. This is my target,' he said. 'Step by step, I'm close to my 100%. I hope that after the summer break in Silverstone, I will be at 100%-if not, surely later on.' Despite the setback, Márquez remains focused on his goals and is determined to return to his best form.
