Alex Ovechkin Waits to Decide Hockey Future
Alex Ovechkin will wait until after the Washington Capitals' season to decide his hockey future.
He needs to discuss it with his family, owner Ted Leonsis, president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan, and general manager Chris Patrick.
Ovechkin's current contract expires June 30, and health will be the biggest factor in his decision.
He's going to be 41 years old in September, so he has to be smart about it.
Ovechkin still enjoys playing and having fun with his teammates, but he wants to make an informed decision.
He has been peppered with questions about his future for several months.
The Capitals have just three games left after playing at Toronto, and they face an uphill climb to make the playoffs.
Coach Spencer Carbery said Ovechkin has the organization's full support, no matter what he decides.
Ovechkin has scored 928 regular season goals, including 31 this season, and 1,000 total goals in the NHL.
He also holds records for most power-play goals with 331, game-winning goals with 141, and shots with 7,091.
The Capitals will visit the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday and host them on Sunday.
The home finale in Washington is sold out, with tickets going for above face value in anticipation of it being Ovechkin's final game.
Ovechkin could opt to play one more season in the KHL, where he started his professional career.
He played for Dynamo Moscow from 2001-05 and during the 2012-13 NHL lockout.
