Alireza Firouzja knocks out world champion Gukesh in Chennai

Alireza Firouzja stunned world champion Dommaraju Gukesh with a round-two upset at the Chennai Grand Masters on 17 July 2026.

The 22-year-old French-Iranian star, ranked world No. 3, exploited a tactical misstep in the middlegame to convert a winning endgame. Gukesh, the 17-year-old Indian prodigy and reigning FIDE world champion, had entered the event with a 12-game unbeaten streak.

What happened on the board

Firouzja struck first on the black side of a Queen’s Gambit Declined. Gukesh essayed the Cambridge Springs Variation, but after 14…Nd7?! the champion drifted into a worse structure. By move 28 Firouzja had a passed d-pawn and a safer king. The game ended in 47 moves when Gukesh resigned on move 47.

The upset handed Firouzja two points from two rounds and vaulted him into a tie for second place behind only Hikaru Nakamura. Nakamura leads with 3/3 after beating Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in round one.

Why it matters for Alireza Firouzja

For Firouzja, the win is his first over a world No. 1 since beating Magnus Carlsen in 2021. It also marks his return to the Chennai swing after skipping last year’s event. The victory keeps him in contention for the $110,000 top prize and a possible Candidates berth via the FIDE Grand Prix.

Yet the bigger story may be momentum. After a rocky Candidates in April, Firouzja has now strung together back-to-back classical wins. His rapid rating has climbed 28 points to 2785, closing the gap to Nakamura’s 2792.

What comes next in Chennai

Round three on 18 July sees Firouzja face Praggnanandhaa, the 18-year-old Indian grandmaster. A win would lift Firouzja into clear second and set up a clash with Nakamura in round four. The event runs until 24 July at the Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Gukesh, meanwhile, must regroup after his first classical loss since last October. The champion still tops the standings on tiebreak but now faces a must-win mindset against Leinier Domínguez in round three.
