UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is one step away from breaking Anderson Silva’s co-owned all-time UFC win streak record at UFC 330 on August 15.

What happened?

Makhachev, who hasn’t lost since 2018, defends his belt against top contender Ian Machado Garry in his first title defense since beating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 last year. A win would give Makhachev 17 straight UFC wins and break the record he currently shares with Anderson Silva.

Longtime teammate Cain Velasquez called Makhachev a “master” of the sport in an interview with Red Corner MMA. Velasquez trains at American Kickboxing Academy alongside Makhachev and praised the team’s leadership.

“He’s a special type of athlete,” Velasquez said. “He’s one of those guys at the pinnacle of this sport. Javier Mendez builds champions, and Islam is getting exactly what he needs.”

Velasquez added that Makhachev has “mastered all aspects of MMA” and continues to win impressively. The praise comes as Makhachev prepares for the biggest fight of his career.
