Andrey Rublev Wins Epic Centre Court Match
Andrey Rublev dived into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with an extraordinary shot to bring up match point against Alexander Bublik on July 9, 2023.
He won 7-5 6-3 6-7 (6) 6-7 (5) 6-4.
The Russian was in the middle of the baseline when Bublik hit what he thought was a clean winner down the line.
But Rublev got a racket on the ball and somehow floated it over the net.
John McEnroe exclaimed: “That is one of the great shots we’ve seen here in years” as Bublik scratched his head in disbelief.
Rublev had been two sets ahead but was pegged back by his opponent from Kazakhstan.
He went on to seal the win after one of the most entertaining matches of the Championships.
The 25-year-old said: “It was the most lucky shot ever. It was luck, nothing else. I don’t think I can do it one more time.”
Rublev will face a new challenge in the quarter-finals.
He is joined in the last eight by fellow Russian Roman Safiullin.
Safiullin became the lowest ranked male quarter-finalist at Wimbledon since Nick Kyrgios in 2014.
He upset Canada’s 26th seed Dennis Shapovalov 3-6 6-3 6-1 6-3.
Andrey Rublev is in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time.
His win over Bublik was a thrilling moment in the Championships.
The Russian's shot will be remembered as one of the greatest in Wimbledon history.
