Andy Murray Ends Wimbledon Career After Emma Raducanu Withdrawal

2026-06-24 · Andy Murray · Player Focus

Andy Murray's Wimbledon career has ended after Emma Raducanu pulled out of their mixed doubles match on July 6, 2024. Murray was ready to play, but Raducanu's wrist stiffness forced her to withdraw.

Raducanu announced her withdrawal approximately four hours before their match, citing stiffness in her right wrist. Murray's camp emphasized that he was ready to play and had no issues with his back.

Murray's Wimbledon career has come to an end, and he expressed disappointment at the way it ended. His mother, Judy Murray, called the development "astonishing" on social media.

Murray had bid farewell to Centre Court on Thursday after his men's doubles exit with brother Jamie. He stated that he was ready to finish playing due to his body not being able to handle the demands of the sport.

Raducanu is set to face New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun on Sunday in the fourth round of the women's singles. Murray, meanwhile, has expressed his love for the sport and his desire to continue playing, but acknowledges that his body can no longer handle it.

Murray and Raducanu were scheduled to appear fourth on Court 1 on Saturday, but the withdrawal has ended Murray's Wimbledon career. Raducanu has won all three of her singles matches so far in straight sets and is in the same half of the draw as second seed Coco Gauff.

The withdrawal has opened up the women's singles draw, with third seed Aryna Sabalenka and eighth and ninth seeds Zheng Qinwen and Maria Sakkari all exiting the tournament. Murray's exit marks the end of an era for the British tennis star, who has had a long and successful career at Wimbledon.

Murray's readiness to finish playing is due to his body not being able to handle the demands of the sport, particularly after his ankle and back surgeries. He expressed his love for the sport and his desire to continue playing, but acknowledges that it is time to move on.

The mixed doubles match was set to be a highly anticipated one, with Murray and Raducanu teaming up to take on Marcelo Arevalo and Zhang Shuai. However, Raducanu's withdrawal has ended Murray's Wimbledon career, and he will now have to look to the future and consider his next steps in the sport.
