Anthony Joshua names Oleksandr Usyk the ‘best fighter in the world’

2026-07-17 · Anthony Joshua · Player Focus

Anthony Joshua has named **Oleksandr Usyk** the ‘best fighter in the world’ after joining the Ukrainian’s camp for training.

The Watford-born heavyweight is set to return to the ring next weekend, and in an interview with DAZN Boxing, he explained why Usyk tops his list. Joshua, a two-time unified heavyweight champion, has suffered two losses to Usyk in their trilogy bouts, but now credits the Ukrainian’s methods for his own revival.

What did Joshua say about Usyk?

Joshua made the bold claim while discussing his switch to Usyk’s team for conditioning work. “He is the best in the world, so let’s go and see what he is doing, what barriers he is breaking down and what boundaries he is pushing,” Joshua told DAZN Boxing. “If I can emulate that in training, I think the results will follow in the ring.”

The 36-year-old also praised Usyk’s approach to boxing-specific conditioning. “Their conditioning was supreme. I’m not talking about just doing S&C and circuits in the gym for the sake of it-I’m talking about boxing conditioning,” he said. “We don’t even hit a pad sometimes. It’s sparring, bag work, shadowboxing, rounds of technical, improving your focus, improving your boxing IQ.”

Why it matters for Anthony Joshua

Joshua’s training shift comes after a rocky stretch. He lost his second heavyweight reign to Usyk in 2022, then fell to Daniel Dubois in 2023 while chasing the IBF title. His only win since? A 2024 exhibition-style clash with Jake Paul under new coach Iegor Golub-who also trains Usyk.

The move to train with Usyk marks a clear pivot. Joshua admitted his own conditioning had slipped, calling it a “main issue.” Now, he’s rebuilding his stamina and focus away from the UK spotlight. “I’ve still got so much room to improve,” he said. “I’m getting my legs back, I’m getting my mind back in the game.”

What comes next for AJ?

Joshua’s next fight is slated for next weekend, though the opponent and venue remain unconfirmed. His last outing-a six-round exhibition with Paul-drew criticism for its lack of competitive edge, but the result (a decision win) gave him a morale boost.

Training with Usyk’s team has clearly shifted his mindset. He’s focused on boxing IQ over generic gym work, and the discipline shows. “Staying away from home helps me get that focus that I need,” he added. With his ring return looming, Joshua’s goal is simple: prove the conditioning work translates to real results.

And if the early signs are any guide, he’s betting big on Usyk’s blueprint.
