Anthony Joshua Speaks Out After Fatal Car Crash
Anthony Joshua spoke out for the first time since the fatal Dec 29 car crash that killed two of his best friends.
The crash occurred on Dec 29, just 10 days after Joshua defeated Jake Paul in a high-profile boxing match on Netflix.
Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus Jeep that smashed into a stationary truck while traveling along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun.
The crash killed Sina Ghami, Joshua's strength and conditioning coach, and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, one of his personal trainers.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver, has been charged with deadly dangerous driving and is expected to appear in court on Jan 20.
The former two-time world heavyweight champion took to Instagram on Jan 4 to share a photo of himself alongside his mother, as well as the mothers of Ghami and Ayodele.
"My brother's keeper," Joshua captioned the post alongside a pair of heart emojis.
Joshua was released from the hospital on Dec 31, two days after the crash.
The funerals for Ghami and Ayodele took place on Jan 7 at a mosque in London, according to BBC.
Lagos' State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, said Joshua was "heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends."
The crash is still under investigation, with Kayode's court appearance scheduled for Jan 20.
Anthony Joshua's team has not commented on his future boxing plans, but the athlete is expected to take time to grieve and recover from the tragic loss, reported on Jan 4.
The boxing community has come together to support Joshua during this difficult time, with many athletes and fans offering condolences on social media, including a post on Jan 5.
The incident has raised concerns about road safety in Nigeria, with many calling for improved infrastructure and stricter driving laws, as reported by local news outlets on Jan 10.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the cause of the accident, according to a report on Jan 12.
