Ben Stokes-backed cricket bars close, 100 UK jobs lost

Ben Stokes-backed cricket-themed entertainment chain Sixes has collapsed, leaving over 100 UK employees redundant. The business, which operated 16 venues across England, entered administration in December 2023 and failed to secure a rescue deal.

What happened to Sixes?

Sixes closed its Southampton site immediately after entering administration in December 2023. Despite efforts to save the business, administrators confirmed in April 2024 that a full rescue was impossible. The Birmingham, Guildford, Fulham, and Westfield venues shut in December, followed by Fitzrovia, Manchester, and Oxford in April.

Why did the chain fail?

The business struggled with fierce competition and reduced consumer spending. Sixes owed £3.4 million to unsecured creditors, including tax authorities. A £4 million deal with Vantage Capital Partners fell through over cash payment disputes, leaving only the London Bridge venue sold for £3.5 million.

What was Ben Stokes' involvement?

Stokes, along with Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad, invested in Sixes through 4Cast Investment Group in 2023. The chain was part of the competitive socialising boom but couldn’t sustain its growth amid economic challenges.

What's next for the brand?

Only the London Bridge site remains open under new ownership. Sixes’ website still lists eight venues, but most are franchise locations. Administrators noted the sale preserved 21 jobs, though 102 employees were made redundant.
