The Union Cycliste Internationale and Tour de France staged a symbolic send-off for twelve African riders training under the UCI World Cycling Centre banner. They rode the final 15 km of the Mûr-de-Bretagne circuit before the pro peloton arrived, then shared the podium with Girmay and top names in the race.

The African squad steps into the spotlight

The twelve riders act as an unofficial twenty-fourth team, backed by the UCI and riding a European racing program in Brittany. Seven men took the Mûr-de-Bretagne circuit on Friday; six women will do the same on stage 1 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift on 26 July, opening the finale in Plumelec.

Rwanda gears up for history

A Rwandan delegation led by Samson Ndayishimiye, president of the Rwandan Cycling Federation, joined the podium to promote the first UCI Road World Championships on African soil. The event runs in Kigali from 21 to 28 September 2025.

Solidarity on Mandela Day

On Friday 18 July, the Tour will back Qhubeka during Nelson Mandela Day. Rwandan rider Adrien Niyonshuti will race the 10.9 km time trial from Loudenvielle to Peyragudes on a Qhubeka-donated bike that has already reached nearly 2,500 African schoolchildren since 2018.
