Bo Nix’s Ankle Injury Puts Broncos Camp Under Microscope

2026-07-19 · Bo Nix · Player Focus

Bo Nix enters Broncos training camp with all eyes on his right ankle after two procedures to repair a fracture suffered in January’s playoff win over Buffalo. The quarterback’s mobility will be scrutinized as Denver prepares for the 2026 season.

What happened to Bo Nix’s ankle?

Nix fractured his ankle on January 17 during Denver’s divisional playoff victory over the Buffalo Bills. The injury required two surgeries, including an arthroscopic “clean-up” to address cartilage and remove hardware. Though he missed OTAs and was limited in minicamp, Nix threw for 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last season while adding 356 rushing yards and five scores.

Why is this a big deal for the Broncos?

Denver’s 14-3 regular-season record hinged on Nix’s dual-threat ability. Head coach Sean Payton expects him to be a full participant by camp’s start, but any hesitation in scramble drills or 7-on-7s could signal lingering issues. Backup Jarrett Stidham, who started the AFC Championship after Nix’s injury, stands ready if needed.

What’s the medical outlook?

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aditya Yerrapragada called the second procedure routine, with no signs of complications. The Broncos’ medical staff deemed Nix’s ankle “as good as new” after June’s minicamp, though Payton admitted the team may hold him back early. Nix has already resumed throwing and building chemistry with new receiver Jaylen Waddle.

What to watch in training camp?

Key moments will come in padded practices, where Nix’s cutting and scrambling speed will be tested. If mobility lags, Stidham and Sam Ehlinger could see extra reps. The Broncos remain optimistic, but Nix’s progress will dictate Denver’s offensive ceiling in 2026.
