Bobby Witt Jr. named Royals' first-half MVP with .286 average, 30 steals

2026-07-13 · Bobby Witt Jr. · Player Focus

Bobby Witt Jr. has been named the Kansas City Royals’ Most Valuable Player for the first half of the 2026 MLB season.

On 13 Jul 2026, the Royals broke for the All-Star break with the worst record in MLB at 38-59. Yet shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. stood out as the team’s brightest spot. In 91 games and 360 at-bats, Witt slashed .286/.340/.476 for an .816 OPS and swiped 30 bases: 10 more than the next-best Royal, Tyler Tolbert.

Witt’s 30 steals lead MLB’s second-half hopefuls and keep him in the AL Rookie of the Year conversation. He’s also been tough on righties, with 10 of his 18 homers coming against them. Against left-handers, he’s hitting .330, showing no platoon split. His durability is unmatched: Witt has played every game so far, logging 91 starts at shortstop.

The Royals’ front office now faces a July trade deadline with two top arms on the block. Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha could bring major returns, but their recent outings have cooled demand. Meanwhile, Witt remains the club’s most consistent bat: and its only All-Star representative in 2026.

Witt’s .286 average ranks third among AL shortstops with 300-plus plate appearances. His 30 steals are 20 clear of Tolbert, the next-best Royal. With 18 homers and 50 RBIs, he’s on pace for a 20-20 season if Kansas City’s struggles continue.
