Wallace’s No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota sliced below the out-of-bounds line with half a lap left, crossing the start/finish line second behind teammate Ty Gibbs. NASCAR officials reviewed the move and penalized him for gaining track position on the apron, a rule designed to keep racing on the primary surface at superspeedways.

Wallace and his team met with officials in the early hours after the rain-delayed 400-miler. The penalty stood, costing him 27 points in the standings with six races left in the regular season.

Wallace admitted he misunderstood the rule before the call. “I always thought it was about gaining position,” he said. “No, it’s gaining track position, which I totally did.”

“If Gibbs hadn’t pushed me at the line, I’d have finished third,” Wallace said. “Pretty sure that wouldn’t have drawn a penalty.”

He called the track “good for us” and pointed to Indianapolis Motor Speedway next week as a chance to defend his Brickyard 400 title.
