Bubba Wallace Penalized: Atlanta NASCAR Finish Overturned After Yellow Line Ruling
Bubba Wallace saw a potential career-best 2026 finish erased when NASCAR penalized him for violating the yellow line rule during the Atlanta Cup Series race on 12 Jul. The 23XI Racing driver was initially scored second after a three-wide last-lap battle but was dropped to 29th for gaining an advantage by driving below the line.
Wallace battled Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar in a thrilling overtime finish at EchoPark Speedway. Despite recovering from a spin caused by Ty Gibbs earlier in the race, Wallace secured second place on the track. However, post-race review showed his car dipped below the yellow line during the final lap, triggering the penalty.
"I turned left and got super loose," Wallace explained post-race. "I was all over the brakes just to give the spot back." He argued that he didn't gain positions by dipping below the line, maintaining he was third before a push from the No. 54 car moved him to second. NASCAR officials upheld the ruling, citing rulebook violations.
Wallace also addressed his on-track clash with Toyota teammate Ty Gibbs. "He had an opportunity to give there a lot. He didn’t," Wallace said, referencing the spin that nearly derailed his race. Gibbs defended his move by claiming Wallace blocked him, though Wallace countered: "You just ran right into me. The block was clean."
The penalty cost Wallace crucial points in the Cup Series playoff hunt. His 29th-place finish replaced what would have been a season-high 107 points with just 32. "That’s another race for Bubba Wallace and Company," he said wryly, acknowledging the setback.
Ryan Blaney was declared the winner after the overtime finish, aided by a final-push from Christopher Bell. Shane van Gisbergen moved up to second following Wallace's penalty.
