Bubba Wallace Penalized After Final-Lap Chaos vs. Ty Gibbs at Atlanta

Bubba Wallace’s Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway ended in controversy after the No. 23 driver was penalized on the final lap of the Quaker State 400, dropping him from second to 29th.

What happened on the final lap?

On 16 June at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Wallace went three-wide for the lead on the last lap. He dipped below the double white line while battling Ty Gibbs, drawing a black-flag penalty that erased his second-place finish. The penalty vaulted him to 29th and cost him valuable Chase points.

Wallace blamed Gibbs for pushing him into the penalty zone. “He had the opportunity to give a lot there, and he didn’t do that,” Wallace told Yahoo Sports. Gibbs countered that Wallace forced the three-wide move that triggered the penalty.

How did Ty Gibbs react?

Gibbs, Wallace’s Toyota teammate, said he was just chasing his own finish when the chaos unfolded. “I saw chaos in front of me and was looking for the best finish I could get for my team,” Gibbs told Frontstretch. He added, “I wouldn’t tell him sorry because he cleared himself. Unfortunately, he showed a lot of disrespect.”

Gibbs finished fourth while Ryan Blaney took the win and Christopher Bell placed second. Gibbs was already eliminated from the In-Season Challenge after losing to Chase Briscoe at Chicagoland the week before.

The penalty leaves Wallace 13th in the points race, perilously close to the Chase cutoff. His last Cup Series win came at the 2025 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Meanwhile, Gibbs earned his first Cup Series victory this year at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Wallace’s 23XI teammate Tyler Reddick has already locked in a Chase spot alongside team owner Denny Hamlin. Wallace needs a strong run to secure his own postseason berth.
