Caleb Williams, Bears’ QB duo shine as Johnson’s leg work fuels early edge

Caleb Williams is already showing why the Bears’ quarterback room is ahead of schedule this summer.

What happened in Bears camp?

Chicago’s offense opened training camp on 15 July with Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson working together to sharpen their timing on quick passes and play-action fakes. Johnson, the Bears’ quarterbacks coach, has been spotted multiple times kneeling beside Williams during individual drills, adjusting footwork and release points. The duo’s leg coordination-Williams’ drop-backs and Johnson’s guidance-has caught the eye of observers watching the first days of practice.

Why the Johnson-Williams leg dynamic matters

The Bears’ early chemistry isn’t just feel-good noise. Williams, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick, is coming off a rookie season where footwork under pressure ranked among his biggest growth areas. Johnson, a former NFL quarterback himself, has spent the offseason breaking down Williams’ lower-body mechanics, aiming to tighten the pocket presence that wobbled at times in 2025. Early tape from 15-16 July shows Williams stepping into throws with cleaner base angles, a change Johnson has pushed since the spring.

And the Bears’ offensive staff isn’t hiding their excitement. “We’re seeing Caleb take real-time corrections and apply them in live reps,” said Matt Eberflus, the Bears’ head coach, on 16 July. “That’s the kind of reps that usually take until August to show up.” The staff’s optimism isn’t just hype-it’s rooted in the fact that Williams’ completion rate on quick-game throws jumped ten percentage points in the first two days of camp compared to the same stretch last year.

What comes next for Williams and the Bears

The real test arrives in padded practices, when contact forces Williams to reset under duress. Johnson’s drills this week focus on reloading the feet after scrambles, a skill that could decide whether Williams’ 2026 leap mirrors his 2025 midseason surge-or stalls again. The Bears open the Hall of Fame Game on 3 August, a stage where Williams’ footwork under center will be under the microscope.

So far, though, the early returns are promising. Williams’ average depth of target on first reads has dropped from 8.2 yards in 2025 to 6.9 yards in camp, a sign Johnson’s leg cues are sinking in. The Bears’ offense, built around play-action and bootlegs, demands crisp footwork from its signal-caller. If Williams and Johnson keep syncing their steps, Chicago’s passing attack could take a real leap before September.
