Caleb Williams erases early-season doubters with standout Week 2 performance

2026-07-13 · Caleb Williams · Match Report

Caleb Williams erased one of the biggest early-season concerns about his game with a standout performance in Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season.

Caleb Williams delivered a polished performance for the Chicago Bears in their Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers on 21 September 2025. The rookie quarterback completed 24 of 36 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns, leading Chicago to a 27-20 victory. Williams showed poise under pressure and connected with his receivers in key moments, silencing critics who questioned his readiness after a shaky Week 1 outing.

Williams’ Week 2 showing came against a Packers defense ranked among the NFL’s best in pass rush. He evaded multiple hits, stepped up in the pocket, and made throws under duress that drew praise from analysts and teammates alike. The Bears’ offense moved the ball efficiently, and Williams’ leadership helped secure Chicago’s first 2-0 start since 2018.

The performance marked a turning point in the narrative around Williams’ rookie campaign. After a sluggish debut in which he threw two interceptions, the second-year quarterback responded with a composed, mistake-free outing. His completion percentage jumped to 66.7%, and his passer rating climbed to 102.5-well above his Week 1 mark of 68.3.

Analysts had flagged Williams’ decision-making in Week 1 as a potential red flag. But in Week 2, he cut down on risky throws and trusted his progressions. The Bears’ coaching staff praised his film study and in-game adjustments, noting how he exploited Green Bay’s blitz-heavy looks.

Chicago heads into its bye week with momentum, and Williams’ confidence appears to be growing. The Bears face the Detroit Lions in Week 4 after the break, a game that could further define their early-season trajectory. Williams will need to replicate his Week 2 form against a Lions defense that ranks among the league’s stingiest in pass defense.

The rookie’s development remains a focal point for the franchise. With a strong supporting cast-including Pro Bowl receiver DJ Moore and a revamped offensive line-the Bears are betting on Williams to lead them back to relevance. If he continues this upward trend, the early-season doubts will fade fast.

The Bears’ 2-0 start has already exceeded expectations under first-year head coach Matt Eberflus. Williams’ growth is central to that success, but the defense and run game deserve credit too. Chicago ranks fifth in the NFL in total defense and has forced three takeaways in two games.

Still, the schedule stiffens from here. The Bears face the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles in Weeks 5 and 6. Williams’ ability to handle that gauntlet will test his readiness-and the Bears’ playoff hopes.

And the early returns suggest he’s more than up for the challenge.
