Carlos Sainz Explains F1 Rivalries

2026-06-29 · Carlos Sainz · Player Focus

Carlos Sainz has explained how he separates his off-track friendships from his on-track rivalries in Formula 1.

The Spanish driver revealed that he only sees rival cars rather than the specific driver when he is racing.

He detailed the mental approach required to race against drivers he regularly spends time with away from the circuit, such as Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and his team-mate Alex Albon.

Sainz formed a well-documented friendship with Norris, affectionately known as 'Carlando', during their stint as McLaren team-mates.

While the two remain close and often play golf and padel together, Sainz insists his personal relationships are irrelevant once he is in the cockpit of his F1 machinery.

"We are extremely competitive and when I put a helmet on, I want to destroy Lando, and I wanna beat him and I wanna beat Alex, beat Charles, beat all of them," the 31-year-old explained.

Currently in his 12th season of F1, Sainz has driven for multiple teams over the years, including Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and Williams.

After being replaced at Ferrari by seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, Sainz signed with Williams alongside Albon.

The Grove outfit has had a difficult start to the 2026 season after it arrived at pre-season testing in Bahrain with an overweight car.

After the first seven rounds, Sainz sits 14th in the drivers' championship with six points.

Sainz's performance on the track is a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport.

However, he faces tough competition from other drivers, including Norris and Leclerc.

As the season progresses, Sainz will need to maintain his focus and competitive edge to succeed in the championship.

With his experience and mental toughness, Sainz is a force to be reckoned with in the world of Formula 1.

His ability to separate friendships from rivalries will be crucial in the upcoming races.

But for now, Sainz remains focused on his goal of winning the championship.

And with his current team, Williams, he is ready to take on the challenge.

So, what's next for Carlos Sainz?

Only time will tell, but one thing is certain - he will give it his all and fight to the end.

On the track, Sainz is a competitor, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

His determination and skill make him a top contender in the championship.

As the season heats up, Sainz will be one to watch.

With his talent and experience, he is sure to make a lasting impression on the world of Formula 1.
