Carlos Sainz Fumes at Rivals' 'Stupid Risks' After Monaco GP Exit

2026-06-23 · Carlos Sainz · Player Focus

Carlos Sainz was left fuming after the Monaco Grand Prix, where he was knocked out of contention due to 'stupid risks' taken by rival drivers.

The incident occurred on the first lap of the restart, when Sainz clipped the barrier on the exit of the hairpin after being hit by Nico Hulkenberg.

He then tried to recover momentum but was knocked into a spin by Franco Colapinto at Portier, ending his race.

The Spaniard had been in a good position to score points, thanks to a clever strategy by his Williams team.

Sainz was unhappy with the behavior of his rivals, stating that people took 'stupid risks' which ruined his race.

He felt that the team had managed the tactics correctly, and he had shown good pace when able to push flat out.

Sainz is cautious about the FW48's potential at his home race in Barcelona, citing the car's overweight and lack of downforce as concerns.

He expects a tricky weekend, but is hopeful that the team can develop the car to score points in the future.

And despite the disappointing outcome in Monaco, Sainz was happy with his pace, having achieved a time of 1m18.0s.

But the incident has left him frustrated, feeling that the effort of the team was wasted due to the actions of other drivers.

So he will be looking to bounce back in Barcelona, where he will aim to score points and make up for the lost opportunity in Monaco.

The Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 26, 2024, and Sainz's early exit was a disappointment for the Williams team.

He had been in 10th place when the race was red-flagged, and was set to move up a spot after George Russell took his drive-through penalty.

But the restart proved disastrous for Sainz, as he was hit by Hulkenberg and then Colapinto, ending his race prematurely.
