Charles Leclerc Adapts Driving Style for 2026 F1 Cars

Charles Leclerc has admitted that Formula 1’s new-era cars have forced him to rethink his aggressive driving style, which has long been a cornerstone of his success. The Ferrari driver secured his first victory of the 2026 season at the British Grand Prix after making subtle but significant adjustments to his approach and car setup.

What changed for Leclerc?

The sweeping regulation changes introduced for 2026 have transformed the way drivers must attack a lap. Reduced downforce and increased emphasis on energy deployment and power unit efficiency have created a very different challenge compared to previous generations of F1 cars. Leclerc, known for his aggressive style, has struggled to adapt initially.

Leclerc explained, 'I've got quite an aggressive driving style in general. I think that has been a strength during my career. But with these cars, sometimes you've got to be careful not going the other side because then the dip is quite big.' He added that inefficient throttle use or inconsistent driving could lead to significant performance losses.

How did Leclerc turn things around?

The turning point came during the Silverstone weekend, where Leclerc made small but impactful changes to his driving. He revealed that a tiny discovery from sprint qualifying data helped him adjust his approach. 'It's not as easy as that one moment where you realise everything you've done wrong,' he said. 'It's a lot of work and trying to understand.'

Leclerc’s adjustments paid off with a victory at the British GP, but he remains cautious. 'This is something I want to prove on multiple racetracks,' he said. 'I'm very happy with the race win, but it's not only with one race win that now everything is fine.'

What’s next for Leclerc?

Leclerc is focused on maintaining his newfound form and consistency. 'If the feeling is there, then it's always been the case that when I feel good with a car, normally the lap times and the performance comes,' he said. With the Belgian GP approaching, Leclerc aims to build on his recent success and continue adapting to the demands of the 2026 cars.
