Charles Leclerc backs Fred Vasseur amid Ferrari budget cap fight with Mercedes

Charles Leclerc has thrown his full support behind Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur as the Scuderia races through the 2026 season with an aggressive development push.

Wolff made the remarks after the Austrian Grand Prix on 29 June 2026, where Ferrari introduced a small power-unit upgrade in a bid to close the gap to Mercedes. Speaking after George Russell’s win at the Red Bull Ring, Wolff said Ferrari had been “throwing things at their car massively” and predicted the team would “be running out of cost cap soon.”

Mercedes, Wolff added, could not match that pace “because we simply haven’t got the margin financially.” Outside Ferrari, Wolff noted most teams-including Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren-had paced their upgrades with one major introduction followed by smaller parts.

Asked for his reaction to Wolff’s comments, Leclerc gave a short but firm response. “On that, I trust Fred [Vasseur] more than anything,” he said. “Of course, there’s a lot of work from the team to try and push production, to try and push the creative minds behind the team that just push in order to have upgrades as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I’m sure Fred is on top of that, so am I worried? I am not, because I fully trust Fred and I know that he knows what he’s doing.”

Vasseur had already hit back at Wolff’s remarks. “If we can bring something at the beginning we do it,” he said. “And it’s better to have a couple of tenths for five races than just a couple of tenths for the last two.”

How the development race shapes up

The 2026 regulations have forced teams to keep developing through the season rather than locking in a package early. Wolff pointed out that Ferrari’s relentless upgrade schedule sets them apart. “The only ones who are not slowing down is Ferrari,” he said. “I mean, between McLaren, Red Bull and ourselves, you can see we had one big one that we introduced in Montreal. We have small parts that come in between. I think the same for Red Bull and McLaren. It’s just Ferrari, who seems to be limitless in that way.”

Ferrari have been Mercedes’ closest challengers this season.
