Gregg Berhalter Defends Christian Pulisic's Injury, Slams Criticism as 'Attention-Seeking'
On 18 June, Christian Pulisic found himself at the center of criticism following the USMNT's Round of 16 exit from the FIFA World Cup. The 27-year-old AC Milan forward was substituted in the 59th minute of the 4-1 loss to Belgium, and his comments about the injury he suffered sparked a wave of debate surrounding his commitment and toughness.

Berhalter Slams Pulisic Criticism
Former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter came to Pulisic's defense, dismissing the criticism as an attempt to generate attention because of the player's popularity. "It's really people trying to get attention because they know how big of a superstar he is, that they know if they mention his name, they'll get clicks," Berhalter said.
Why it matters for Christian Pulisic
Berhalter highlighted Pulisic's leadership and selfless attitude within the squad. "You know, the one thing I know about Christian, and I've worked with a lot of top players, is I haven't seen a top player be such a humble and team guy like Christian Pulisic," he said. "He does not have the superstar ego. He's a total team player."
What comes next?
Berhalter also addressed Pulisic's injury, insisting it was legitimate and urging people not to make assumptions. "And he's injured. He's legitimately injured. And mean, that's something that, you know, it's so easy for us to sit here and talk negatively about a player without understanding what they're actually going through," he said.
U.S. Soccer later confirmed the extent of Pulisic's injury after X-rays revealed a microfracture. "Christian Pulisic has been diagnosed with a microfracture and bone bruise of the tibia/fibula in his right leg suffered during the match against Belgium. U.S. Soccer and AC Milan will be collaborating on his recovery plan," the statement read.
Berhalter rejected any suggestions that Pulisic lacked commitment or determination. "But to question his lack of effort or lack of caring or lack of determination or even his character, I think is unwarranted because he's a great guy, he's a humble guy, and he cares so much about the team," he said.
