Clayton Oliver Involved in Collision as Geelong Star Faces Surgery

2026-07-13 · Clayton Oliver · Player Focus

Clayton Oliver was involved in a match-defining collision with Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron during the Cats' 13-point loss to GWS at Engie Stadium. Cameron will undergo surgery for a left shoulder AC joint repair, facing a 4-6 week recovery timeline.

The incident occurred in the final quarter of the AFL clash, forcing Cameron to hospital in Sydney. The 33-year-old veteran had been managing a healed right arm fracture before the injury. Geelong coach Chris Scott confirmed the recovery window on Kayo Sports Monday night, stating, "We'd like to think that's our default position on these things."

Ninth-placed Geelong (9-8) remains hopeful Cameron could return before finals. The Cats are monitoring Jack Henry (throat) and Tanner Bruhn (neck), both cleared of serious injury after hospital visits. Phoenix Gothard (GWS) also suffered a dislocated shoulder in the high-casualty match.

While Oliver wasn't cited for the contact, the collision highlighted the physicality of the contest. The 25-year-old midfielder has been a key figure for GWS this season, averaging 28 disposals across 17 appearances. No sanction is expected for the incident.

Geelong faces a crunch run of fixtures against top-six sides. Cameron's potential return aligns with September's finals series, though his existing arm soreness complicates recovery. "It can wait until the end of the year," Scott said regarding the pre-existing injury.

Hawthorn defender Karl Amon meanwhile underwent knee surgery, targeting a finals return. The 30-year-old veteran missed round four's Geelong clash due to cartilage issues but contributed 12 disposals in Saturday's 64-point win over Carlton.
