Coco Gauff loses Wimbledon semifinal in heartbreaking tiebreak

Coco Gauff’s bid for a third Grand Slam title ended in heartbreak on July 9 as she lost a gripping Wimbledon semifinal to Karolina Muchova in a final-set tiebreak. The 22-year-old from Delray Beach, Florida, fought back from a set down but ultimately fell 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 in a match that saw her push her Czech opponent to the limit.

Gauff, the highest remaining seed after top players like Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek were eliminated, dropped the first set before rallying to take the second. The deciding set went to a tiebreak, where Muchova held her nerve despite Gauff’s late surge. A costly unforced error-her 35th of the match-on a drop shot at 8-8 proved decisive, allowing Muchova to clinch the win.

Muchova, who battled cramping in the London heat, celebrated with tears as Gauff received a standing ovation. The Czech will now face either Linda Noskova or Marta Kostyuk in the final, both of whom are vying for their first major final appearance.

This was Gauff’s first Wimbledon semifinal, a tournament where she had previously struggled, losing in the first round in two of the past three years. Her run this year, including wins over Belinda Bencic and Jessica Pegula, marked a breakthrough on the grass courts. However, the loss means she’ll have to wait for another chance to add to her 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 French Open titles.
