Cody Rhodes Fires Back at CM Punk's Ego Claims After Unscripted Confrontation

Cody Rhodes and CM Punk's tensions reached a boiling point during the SummerSlam 2026 Kickoff show. The two superstars were teamed together to take on Gunther and Sami Zayn, but their partnership led to an issue that was addressed at the Kickoff event.

What happened?

The rift between Rhodes and Punk traces back to Saturday Night's Main Event 45, where The Best in the World accidentally struck Rhodes in the face with the Undisputed WWE title after their match. Punk labeled it an "accident" during a fiery confrontation backstage, which seemed unscripted.

Why it matters for Cody Rhodes

At the Kickoff event, the Chicago Made star attempted to smooth things over, suggesting an apology. However, Rhodes rejected the proposal, saying they were not brothers. Punk then accused Rhodes of being paranoid, expecting betrayal from his past experiences with John Cena and Randy Orton.

What comes next?

Rhodes fired back, refusing to buy Punk's narrative. Cody admitted to his own ego while calling out Punk's real motives behind the incident. Rhodes stopped Punk from speaking, dismissing Punk's excuses. "Guess what? Newsflash: I'm wearing purple pants. Clearly, I have an ego. It's transparent. I learned later than you. I don't know it all like you do, right? So I do have an ego, but you-there's so much that's unsaid between you and I. It is very hard to be your friend sometimes because you don't talk to me about ego. Last night, your mask slipped. That wasn't an accident, so I don't want to hear any of this ego bullsh*t," Rhodes said.

The aftermath

During the same confrontation between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, Triple H came out to stop the issue from escalating. It is likely that The Game sensed the tension and was out there on the stage himself to avoid any more physical give-and-take. "I told you, I'll tell publicly to everybody, I'll tell you again. Last night was an accident, and I apologized. This is on purpose. That's on purpose, little brother," Punk said.

Punkster took the mic and said the thing he was about to do now was purposeful. That's when he shoved Cody in the face, while Michael Cole stopped him from retaliating and HHH held back the Undisputed WWE Champion. In this chaos, the SummerSlam Kickoff show ended.

The tension between Rhodes and Punk is far from over, and it remains to be seen how this confrontation will affect their future matches and relationships in the WWE.
