Dale Earnhardt Jr. hints at NASCAR's 2027 Chicago racing plans

2026-07-13 · Dale Earnhardt Jr · Club News

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has shared insights into NASCAR’s potential 2027 plans for Chicago, hinting at a return to Chicagoland Speedway and possibly the Chicago Street Course. The Cup Series races at Chicagoland this weekend for the first time since 2019, sparking discussions about the track’s future.

On his podcast *Bless Your Heart*, Earnhardt Jr. revealed that NASCAR is considering a return to Chicagoland Speedway in 2027. He also mentioned rumors about the Chicago Street Course race making a comeback the same year. The street race was absent from the 2026 schedule, replaced by a debut race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego.

Earnhardt Jr. noted that this weekend’s race at Chicagoland is expected to sell out, which could strengthen the case for future races in the area. He said, “I got word that it will likely be a sellout this weekend and I also got word that they (NASCAR) are looking to go back (to Chicagoland).”

The potential return of both Chicagoland Speedway and the Chicago Street Course would give NASCAR fans in the region two major events in one season. Chicagoland Speedway last hosted a Cup Series race in 2019, while the Chicago Street Course debuted in 2023 but was dropped from the 2026 schedule.

If both races return in 2027, it would mark a major expansion of NASCAR’s presence in Chicago. The sellout crowd expected this weekend could demonstrate strong fan interest, making a compelling case for NASCAR to invest in the area long-term.

Discussions about the Chicago Street Course’s return are already underway, with a potential 2027 date on the table. Meanwhile, this weekend’s race at Chicagoland Speedway could serve as a test for future events at the track.

Earnhardt Jr. suggested that NASCAR executives are closely watching the turnout and reception for this weekend’s race. If successful, it could pave the way for more races at Chicagoland in the coming years. For now, fans will have to wait to see if NASCAR officially confirms its 2027 plans for Chicago.
