Dale Earnhardt Jr. Leads Revival of North Wilkesboro Speedway for Historic NASCAR Race

Dale Earnhardt Jr. played a pivotal role in reviving North Wilkesboro Speedway, setting the stage for NASCAR’s first Cup Series points race at the historic track in 30 years. The event, scheduled for next week, marks a milestone for the venue and the sport, with drivers and local leaders praising Earnhardt’s dedication.

What happened at North Wilkesboro Speedway?

The speedway, dormant since 1996, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was deeply involved in the restoration, even riding a street sweeper around the track during cleanup efforts. Christopher Buescher, who participated in the early cleanup, recalled Earnhardt’s enthusiasm. “I remember Dale riding around on the street sweeper just making laps and smiling ear to ear covered in mud,” Buescher said.

Why does this matter for NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt Jr.?

Earnhardt’s influence was crucial in bringing NASCAR back to North Wilkesboro. Buescher and Denny Hamlin both credited Earnhardt’s efforts as essential to the track’s revival. Hamlin noted, “He has such a huge influence in our sport. When he went on a journey to revive the racetrack, it just seems like he made it happen.”

Who else contributed to the revival?

Local advocates, including Terri Parsons and Mayor Robert Johnson, worked tirelessly for decades to preserve the speedway. Parsons, whose late husband Benny Parsons was a champion, said the return of a Cup race fulfilled a long-held dream. “Benny had a list of 10 things he wanted done. This was the last thing on the list,” she said.

What’s next for North Wilkesboro Speedway?

Chase Elliott, who won a PASS Series race at the track in 2010, expressed excitement about the upcoming event. “I’m super excited about it for a lot of different reasons,” Elliott said. The race week will feature four events, signaling a new era for the historic venue.
