Dale Earnhardt’s push brings North Wilkesboro back to NASCAR Cup Series in 2026

Dale Earnhardt’s 2019 weed-clearing mission at North Wilkesboro Speedway led to the track’s 2026 Cup Series return after 30 years.

What happened?

On a freezing December morning in 2019, Dale Earnhardt stood on the abandoned North Wilkesboro Speedway and grabbed a street sweeper. Covered in mud, he led volunteers who hacked weeds and cleared debris so iRacing could scan the 0.625-mile track for a virtual-replica project. The goal: preserve the site where NASCAR’s premier Cup Series raced from 1949 to 1996.

Earnhardt’s work jump-started a revival nobody expected. The track reopened for grassroots racing in 2022. Then NASCAR brought its non-points All-Star event there for three straight seasons. On Sunday, 20 July 2026, North Wilkesboro hosts its first points-paying Cup race since 1996.

Why it matters for Dale Earnhardt

Earnhardt’s push proved his voice still carries weight a decade after retiring from driving. “He’s still the most popular, certainly the most influential,” said Denny Hamlin, Joe Gibbs Racing driver and 23XI Racing co-owner. Hamlin called Earnhardt the sport’s single biggest influencer.

RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher was among those who answered Earnhardt’s December 2019 call for volunteers. “We got there, and I remember Dale riding around on the street sweeper, just making laps, smiling ear-to-ear, covered in mud,” Buescher said. “It was nasty. It was cold. But, man, he actually did the bulk of the work already.”

How the revival took shape

Earnhardt pitched iRacing on pairing vintage cars with the North Wilkesboro layout to create a digital time capsule. The simulation project required a clean track, so Earnhardt rallied a crew to clear brush and restore sightlines. Marcus Smith, the track’s owner, saw the momentum and reopened the facility for local competition.

NASCAR’s 2023 All-Star stop proved the gamble worked. Fans packed the 20,000-seat oval, proving the market for short-track racing. That response forced NASCAR to ask: could North Wilkesboro host a points race? The answer arrived on the 2026 schedule.

What comes next?

Earnhardt told *The Athletic* the project started with a simple question: How do we keep vintage NASCAR alive? The answer became a real-world track revival. Now the Cup Series returns to a place many had written off.

“Man, I really think we need some vintage cars,” Earnhardt said in the 2026 interview. The North Wilkesboro date on the 2026 Cup calendar stands as proof his vision turned into action.
