Daly Cherry-Evans refuses to commit to Roosters future beyond 2026

2026-07-15 · Daly Cherry-Evans · Player Focus

Daly Cherry-Evans has again dodged questions about his 2027 playing future, insisting he’s just enjoying the ride as the 2026 NRL finals loom.

What did Cherry-Evans say?

Cherry-Evans fronted up at Sydney Roosters training on Wednesday and refused to confirm whether he’ll take up his 2027 player option. The 37-year-old veteran stuck to his familiar script, calling himself “playing with house money” and stressing he’s focused on the finals push.

“I’ve said it for the last few years, I’m playing with house money,” he told reporters. “It’s been a hell of a ride and whenever it ends I’m going to be so grateful for how long I’ve been able to play this game.”

Where does he stand now?

Cherry-Evans has played every game for the Roosters in 2026, sitting third on the all-time NRL/NSWRL premiership games list. Fitness permitting, he’ll pass Cooper Cronk’s 372 matches before the finals and close in on Cameron Smith’s record 430 games.

The veteran five-eighth turns 37 in October and has already locked in his 2026 season. His next move will shape whether he retires at the top or pushes for a 38th year.

Why the delay on 2027?

Cherry-Evans has form here. Twelve months ago he dodged the same questions, sparking distractions at Brookvale. The pattern repeats: he won’t be drawn on life beyond 2026, even as the Roosters chase another premiership tilt.

His stance keeps the focus on footy. “Right now the fire is burning,” he said. “There’s a great opportunity in front of us, I just have to make sure I keep really focussed.”

What happens next?

The Roosters are deep in finals contention, and Cherry-Evans is locked in as their pivot. If they advance, his durability will be tested over the next month. A grand final run could force the club to lock him in for 2027-or tempt a rival to prise him loose.

For now, the 368-game man stays mum. The clock ticks, the questions linger, and the legend keeps playing.
