Dani Alves Jailed on Sexual Assault Charge
Dani Alves, the Brazilian soccer star, was remanded to jail on Friday by a Spanish judge.
The Catalonia Higher Court of Justice press office announced the decision.
Alves was detained earlier Friday by the Catalan regional police.
He spoke to officers at a police station in Barcelona and then was driven to the courthouse.
The woman who made the complaint against Alves testified Friday before the magistrate.
A witness also testified, according to the court's press office.
Alves' contract was terminated by Mexican team Club Universidad Nacional.
Club president Leopoldo Silva announced the decision, citing the team's commitment to not tolerate acts against its values.
The investigating magistrate allowed Alves to have communications while in jail.
But the content of the woman's testimony was not made public by the magistrate.
Alves denied the accusations against him in a recorded video sent to a Spanish reporter.
He also denied any wrongdoing, according to Reuters.
The incident allegedly happened in a Barcelona discotheque in December.
The state prosecutor's case against Alves is ongoing, with a private prosecution also presented by the woman's attorney.
Alves is one of the most decorated football players of his generation.
He won domestic titles in Spain, Italy, and France, and three Champions League titles with Barcelona.
The contract termination was effective immediately, according to Club Universidad Nacional.
The team's decision was made to maintain its values and work philosophy, said Silva.
Alves, 39, remained in police custody before being arraigned before the magistrate.
The case against him is ongoing, with the next steps to be determined by the Spanish court.
