Daniel Naroditsky Dies: Chess Grandmaster's Cause of Death Revealed

Daniel Naroditsky, a 29-year-old American chess grandmaster, died with methamphetamine, amphetamine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, and mitragynine in his system, a toxicology report revealed.

Naroditsky was found dead on October 19 at his Charlotte, North Carolina, residence by fellow grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk.

He had been accused of using computer-based "chess engines" to cheat, which he denied.

The chess prodigy earned his grandmaster title at 18 and was consistently ranked in the top 200 worldwide for traditional chess.

Naroditsky also excelled at blitz chess, maintaining a top 25 ranking throughout his adult career.

He won the U.S. National Blitz Championship and was known for livestreaming his matches on YouTube and Twitch.

The medical examiner has not yet released Naroditsky's official manner of death.

About a year before his death, Naroditsky was accused of cheating in online chess by Russian grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik.

Naroditsky denied the allegations and continued to play, introducing the sport to a wider audience through his livestreams.

He was the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine and Azerbaijan and was born and raised in San Mateo County, California.

Naroditsky studied history at Stanford University, earning a bachelor's degree in 2019 after taking a year off to play in chess tournaments.

After college, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he coached the area's top junior chess players.

Naroditsky's death has shocked the chess community, with many fellow grandmasters paying tribute to his skills and contributions to the sport.
