Daniel Naroditsky Dies at 29, Investigation Underway
Daniel Naroditsky died on October 19 at age 29. His club, Charlotte Chess Center, announced the news on October 20.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating Naroditsky's death as a possible suicide or drug overdose.
Police responded to a call at a private residence in the southern suburbs of Charlotte at approximately 7:11 p.m. on October 19.
Upon arrival, an unresponsive subject was located and later pronounced deceased by medic.
Naroditsky was a cherished member of the chess community, admired and respected by fans and players around the world.
He won the Under 12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in 2007.
In 2013, Naroditsky won the U.S. Junior Championship and achieved his grandmaster title.
The investigation into Naroditsky's death is ongoing.
Naroditsky's family remembered him as a beloved figure in the chess community.
He authored two books, *Mastering Positional Chess* and *Mastering Complex Endgames*, and was an occasional chess columnist for *The New York Times*.
Naroditsky had nearly 500,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, where he streamed and uploaded videos giving live commentary and instruction during chess games.
In his final YouTube video, uploaded on October 17, Naroditsky acknowledged his brief hiatus from content creation.
He told his viewers, "You thought I was gone forever, but little do you know, I'm actually back and better than ever.
