Declan Rice's fitness in doubt ahead of Argentina World Cup semi-final

2026-07-14 · Declan Rice · Match Report

Declan Rice's availability for England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina remains uncertain as he continues to recover from illness. The Arsenal midfielder was substituted at half-time during England's 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway on 10 July, having spent three days in bed with a sickness bug.

Rice contracted the illness during England's stay in Mexico, where they defeated the co-hosts 3-2 in the last 16. Though his condition has improved over the past 48 hours, England's medical staff will assess him late before the match in Atlanta. Manager Thomas Tuchel will monitor Rice's progress in training before finalising his team selection.

Rice has been a key figure for England, starting all but one of their matches at the tournament. His absence in the group-stage win over Panama was due to a separate issue-a neural problem affecting his lower back and hamstring that he has managed for several months. Given the magnitude of the semi-final, Rice is expected to declare himself available if possible.

England are also monitoring several players who completed 120 minutes against Norway in punishing heat. Harry Kane, Elliot Anderson, Marc Guehi, and John Stones will be assessed in training this week. Tuchel will provide a fuller update on his squad during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Argentina, who needed extra time to beat Switzerland 3-1, await England in Atlanta. Rice's potential return would be a significant boost for England as they aim to reach the World Cup final for the first time since 1966.
