Demi Vollering Wins Giro Queen Stage
Demi Vollering won the penultimate stage of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday.
The 29-year-old's second win of the week was on the Colle delle Finestre after an attack to pass race leader Anna van der Breggen.
The stage was shortened due to an avalanche warning at the top of the final climb at 2,178 meters.
This meant the riders crossed the line just under 30km early in what was supposed to be a 105km day.
Demi Vollering stepped up the pace of the front group within the final 10km.
She left only a group of four with Van der Breggen, Isabella Holmgren, and Antonia Niedermaier.
Vollering's win brings her just 50 seconds off the top spot with one stage to go.
Her team FDJ Suez's third win was not enough to unseat her SD Worx rival's overall lead.
But Demi Vollering is now in a strong position to challenge for the overall title.
The final stage will take the riders 145km around Saluzzo in northern Italy.
The toughest climb of 9km at 9.4 per cent will be a challenge for all the riders.
Demi Vollering will need to be at her best to overhaul Anna van der Breggen and win the title.
The stage will finish with a downhill into the finish, which could be decisive.
As of June 6, 2026, Demi Vollering is second in the general classification, 50 seconds behind Anna van der Breggen.
And the young rider's classification is still led by Isabella Holmgren.
So Demi Vollering's focus will be on the final stage and the chance to win the title.
But she will face strong competition from her rivals, including Anna van der Breggen and Antonia Niedermaier.
