Dominik Szoboszlai signs five-year Liverpool deal to become one of Anfield’s top earners

Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a five-year contract extension with Liverpool, keeping him at Anfield until 2031.

What happened?

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the deal, calling it a “fantastic news” for the club. The Hungarian captain’s original contract was set to expire in 2028, but Liverpool moved fast to secure his long-term future. The new deal puts Szoboszlai among the Reds’ top earners, ending months of contract talks.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool for £60 million in 2023 and has since become a key leader in midfield. His previous weekly wage was around £150,000, but his new contract reflects his growing influence and consistent performances.

Why it matters for Dominik Szoboszlai

The timing of the deal was critical. Romano suggested that if talks had dragged on, Liverpool risked losing Szoboszlai next summer, much like they did with Ibrahima Konate. The club cleared out high earners over the break, freeing up wage space to meet Szoboszlai’s demands.

His new deal puts him in the same bracket as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who earn around £400,000 per week. Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo also signed renewals worth £277,000 and £250,000 respectively.

Szoboszlai’s agent pushed for £300,000 per week earlier this year, a figure Romano says aligns with his new deal. The midfielder’s leadership and performances-even in a tough season for many at Liverpool-made his case unmissable.

What comes next?

Liverpool’s new head coach Andoni Iraola can now plan with Szoboszlai as a long-term cornerstone. The club’s sporting director Richard Hughes gets credit for closing the deal before it became a transfer risk.

Romano called Szoboszlai “probably the only one” performing at the highest level during a difficult campaign. The midfielder’s contract runs until 2031, giving Liverpool stability in midfield for years to come.
