Federica Brignone reveals career uncertainty after injury comeback

2026-07-17 · Federica Brignone · Player Focus

Federica Brignone has opened up about the lingering effects of her 2025 leg injury, admitting her body may never fully recover. The Italian alpine skier, who won two gold medals at the Milan-Cortina Olympics despite limited preparation, faces an uncertain future as she prepares for the upcoming season.

What happened to Federica Brignone?

The 32-year-old suffered a **fracture of the tibia and fibula** during the giant slalom at the Italian Championships in April 2025. Fifteen months later, she remains in recovery, though her condition has improved since last summer. Brignone told *The Team*, 'This time last year, I didn't even know when I'd be able to walk.'

Why it matters for Federica Brignone

Brignone's injury has forced her to rethink her career. While she managed to compete at the Olympics, her training remains limited. She can cycle, swim, and go to the gym, but running is still impossible. Pain is a constant presence, and she acknowledges her body will never be the same.

What comes next for Federica Brignone?

The skier plans to return to training in August, with a trip to Ushuaia in September for team preparations. However, she remains unsure about competing in the full season. 'I'm preparing as if I wanted to do the whole season,' she said. 'But I don't know if I'll be able to do it.'

Brignone has also ruled out competing at the 2030 Olympics, stating it's too far away. Instead, she's focusing on the present, with more space for travel and sports outside professional competition. 'In life, you never know,' she added, leaving the door open to future possibilities.
