Federica Brignone Dominates Skiing World Championships

2026-06-29 · Federica Brignone · Player Focus

Federica Brignone is on course for her second overall title after winning five World Cup races this season.

Brignone finished 0.01 seconds ahead of Sofia Goggia to win the final World Cup downhill before the world championships.

Brignone has been on the podium in the last seven races she’s completed, with eight podium finishes in 15 races this season.

Brignone leads the overall World Cup standings and the downhill standings.

The Alpine skiing world championships will feature the super-G on Thursday and the downhill on Saturday, with Brignone and Goggia among the favorites.

Goggia and Brignone might also join forces for the new team combined event next week.

Goggia would race downhill and Brignone would race slalom, despite slalom being Brignone's weakest event.

Brignone has a simple approach: “I will try just to do my skiing and my best and what I’ve been doing all winter and not to change anything.”

Goggia started her preparations for this season late due to a crash a year ago, but has five podium finishes in 11 races and two wins.

Goggia missed last season’s World Cup finals while recovering from an injury that required a metal rod to be inserted into her right leg.

The course in Saalbach-Hinterglemm is fairly flat, but requires skiers to handle the terrain well and adjust to the rhythm of the course.

Goggia said: “It’s not a difficult course but it’s difficult to master correctly.”

At last year's World Cup finals in Saalbach, Brignone won the giant slalom and finished second in the super-G.

Brignone has taken a big step up in downhill this season, claiming her first two victories in the discipline.

Brignone is the oldest woman to win at 34, and is on track to achieve her goal of being the best skier who can do it all in the same season.

Brignone said: “To me, the best skier has always been the one who can do it all in the same season, so to be able to say I’ve done that is pretty cool.”

The skiing world championships will continue with the super-G on Thursday, where Brignone and Goggia will look to add to their medal tally.

The event will be closely watched, with fans eager to see if Brignone can continue her dominant form.

Brignone's success has been impressive, with five wins in 15 races this season.

Goggia's determination to succeed despite her injury is admirable, and she will be looking to make a strong comeback.

The stage is set for an exciting competition, with Brignone and Goggia leading the charge for Italy.
