2026-07-19 · Félix Auger-Aliassime · Player Focus

Félix Auger-Aliassime’s father, Sam Aliassime, was his first tennis coach and remains a pivotal figure in his career. The Canadian star, now a top-ranked player, attributes much of his success to his father’s early guidance and sacrifices.

Who is Sam Aliassime?

Sam Aliassime was born in Togo, West Africa, where soccer was the dominant sport. After realizing he lacked the skills for a soccer career, he turned to tennis. He became a tennis instructor, teaching himself from French magazines borrowed from visiting service members. In 1993, he moved to Quebec, where he continued coaching and later founded the Académie Aliassime.

How did Sam influence Félix’s career?

Sam coached Félix from a young age, instilling discipline and work ethic. He emphasized the importance of family involvement in a player’s development, stating, 'Twenty-five percent happens on the court. The rest is off the court.' Though he stepped back from direct coaching, Sam remains involved, offering insights at the start and end of each season.

What challenges did the family face?

Sam’s journey to Canada was challenging. He left Togo at 26, leaving behind his family and facing cultural adjustments. Félix recalls, 'Seeing what my dad had to sacrifice to come to Canada, leaving all his family behind, helped me understand the value of hard work.' Despite the struggles, Sam’s dedication laid the foundation for Félix’s success.

What’s next for Félix Auger-Aliassime?

As Félix continues to compete at the highest level, his father’s influence remains a driving force. With a strong support system, including his wife Nina Ghaibi and sister Malika, Félix is poised to achieve even greater heights in his career.
