Filippo Ganna Launches Attack in Giro d'Italia Rome Finale
Filippo Ganna launched a huge attack in the Giro d'Italia Rome finale but was caught 3km from the finish line.
The Italian time triallist extraordinaire dominated the Giro's flat stage 10 time trial in Tuscany, winning by almost two minutes.
Filippo Ganna put his plan into action 18km from the end of the 131km stage in Italy's capital city.
He was joined by Jasper Stuyven and Matteo Sobrero, who sat on Ganna's wheel.
Ganna alone powered the move to a 20-second advantage with 10km to go.
He looked like he might will the move to an unlikely victory in front of the Circus Maximus.
But Unibet Rose Rockets and Tudor Pro Cycling worked to ensure the sprinters could battle it out for the win.
In the end, there was no fairytale ending to the Giro for the late attackers.
Ganna, Stuyven, and Sobrero were caught, and Jonathan Milan blasted to glory, beating Paul Magnier.
"I wanted to try, obviously," Filippo Ganna told Kirsten Frattini after the finish.
"Maybe it's not the best final for me," he added.
Those two riders followed him, and for sure, if they had a little bit more collaboration or different riders, but this is the way it is.
It wasn't to be for 'Top Ganna' on the streets of Rome, but for a few moments in the evening sunshine, he made it look possible.
Filippo Ganna's attack was a highlight of the Giro d'Italia final stage.
He showed his strength and determination, even if he didn't win.
The Italian cyclist has had a successful Giro d'Italia, with a stage win in the time trial.
He will look to build on this success in future races.
