Francesco Bagnaia shines in Sachsenring qualifying as Marquez breaks lap record

Francesco Bagnaia turned in a solid qualifying effort at the 2026 German Grand Prix, securing fifth on the grid as Marc Marquez broke the Sachsenring lap record to take pole on 18 June.

Marc Marquez set a blistering lap time of 1:19.041 on his Ducati to smash the Sachsenring record and claim his third pole of the 2026 MotoGP season. The six-time world champion’s time edged out his brother Alex Marquez by just 0.061 seconds, locking out the front row for the Repsol Honda and Ducati teams. Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez briefly led before VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marquez overhauled him in the final sector.

Francesco Bagnaia, riding for Ducati Lenovo, ended up fifth in the session with a time of 1:19.323: 0.282 seconds behind Marquez’s pole time. The Italian’s performance came amid a tight fight that saw Quartararo and Di Giannantonio trade provisional poles before Marquez’s late surge. Bagnaia’s effort kept him in the mix for Sunday’s race, though he’ll need to convert it into points to challenge for the podium.

Marco Bezzecchi’s weekend ended in the gravel after a heavy crash in Q2, sidelining the VR46 rider with a serious injury. Quartararo, on the latest Yamaha upgrades, rounded out the top three behind the Marquez brothers, while Di Giannantonio held on to fourth. The session was marred by Bezzecchi’s exit, but the drama didn’t stop there: Fernandez’s early lead and Quartararo’s late push added to the unpredictability of a track notorious for close, tactical races.

Bagnaia heads into Sunday’s race with a fifth-place grid spot and a chance to capitalize on the Sachsenring’s tight, technical layout. The Italian will need to manage tires and track position against a front row stacked with Marquez’s Ducati and Honda’s aggressive pace. With Bezzecchi out and Quartararo lurking, Bagnaia’s route to the podium hinges on clean starts and smart strategy: two areas where Ducati’s 2026 package has shown both speed and fragility in equal measure.
