Franco Morbidelli Faces Uncertain MotoGP Future

2026-06-23 · Franco Morbidelli · Transfer

Franco Morbidelli's MotoGP future is increasingly uncertain as the 2027 grid takes shape, with only two riders having valid contracts for next season.

The Italian rider's departure from VR46 Racing and the sport looks more certain than most of the arrivals and rider swaps.

Morbidelli has struggled to find form in 2026, currently sitting 14th in the standings as Ducati's lowest-placed rider.

He has had some positives, qualifying second in Barcelona and finishing third in the Jerez sprint.

Reports from motorsport.com claim that Fermin Aldeguer has agreed terms for 2027, while Fabio di Giannantonio will head to KTM's factory team, leaving Morbidelli quickly running out of options.

Corse di Moto corroborate those claims, saying Morbidelli will leave VR46, and most likely the sport.

Morbidelli was the first-ever member of the VR46 Academy, perhaps making his departure from the eponymous team full circle after nine years in MotoGP.

He lost his factory seat at the end of 2023 and has since been racing with Ducati.

In 2026, Morbidelli has struggled to match his teammate Di Giannantonio, who is third in the standings and competing for the title.

And Morbidelli's own words suggest he is struggling to find his footing, saying his feeling on the bike is not the same as last year or two years ago.

But he has found some positives since changing his way of working after Austin, and things have gone better and better in practice.

So Morbidelli will be looking to maximize what he has and make the most of his remaining time in MotoGP.

As the silly season continues to unfold, Morbidelli's future remains uncertain, with his options limited and his time in MotoGP potentially coming to an end.
