Frank Lampard completes third signing as Coventry seal £17m Amenda deal

Frank Lampard has completed his third signing of the transfer window, bringing in Switzerland centre-back Aurele Amenda for £17 million.

What happened?

Coventry City announced the £17 million deal for Amenda on 16 July 2026. The 22-year-old defender joins from Eintracht Frankfurt on a four-year contract. Lampard, the head coach, played a key role in sealing the move after speaking with Amenda directly.

Amenda was part of Switzerland’s 26-man squad at the 2026 World Cup. He did not play as Switzerland reached the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina in extra time. Over the past two seasons with Frankfurt, he made 42 appearances in all competitions, including 22 starts.

Why it matters for Frank Lampard

The signing marks Coventry’s third arrival this window. Lampard previously made Frank Onyeka’s loan permanent from Brentford and signed Loum Tchaouna from Burnley for £20 million. Amenda’s arrival strengthens a defence preparing for a Premier League return after Coventry’s promotion.

Amenda cited Lampard’s trust and project vision as reasons for joining. “After the first call with the gaffer, I felt the trust and I liked the project,” he told Coventry’s website. “I cannot wait to meet everyone at the club, especially the fans and my team-mates.”

What comes next?

Amenda’s Premier League debut could arrive on 21 August 2026. Coventry visit Arsenal, the reigning champions, in the season opener at the Emirates Stadium. Lampard’s side will look to build from a strong defensive base with Amenda in the mix.

The defender described himself as calm with the ball and eager to help his new team. “I like to defend my goal but I also like to play,” he said. “I’m really calm with the ball so I can help the team with this.”

Frank Lampard now has three new faces to integrate before the season curtain-raiser. The squad faces a steep challenge against Arsenal but gains a promising young defender to bolster its ranks.
