Frankie Dettori Returns to Health After Car Accident in July

2026-07-08 · Frankie Dettori · Player Focus

**Frankie Dettori** was released from Addenbrooke’s Hospital on 4 July, confirming he escaped the July 1 car crash in Newmarket with broken ribs, a fractured thumb and a bruised ego. The 55‑year‑old jockey said he felt "very relieved" the injuries weren’t worse and that he’s now resting at home with his family.

On the evening of 1 July, Dettori’s Smart Car was struck on the rear passenger side by another vehicle on the Newmarket road in West Sussex. The impact sent his car spinning and flipping onto its roof. Emergency crews attended the scene and both drivers were taken to hospital as a precaution. Dettori emerged with four broken ribs and a broken thumb, while the other driver’s condition was not disclosed.

In a statement released by H Talent Management, Dettori thanked the emergency services and Addenbrooke’s staff for their care. He posted on Instagram, "I’m very sore and have a few broken ribs, so I’ll be taking some time to rest and recover." He also expressed gratitude for the flood of messages and calls he received. The jockey emphasized that rest and time are the only remedies for broken ribs, echoing the reality of a career that has seen many injuries.

Dettori recently confirmed a ride in the Leger Legends charity race at Doncaster, scheduled for September. The event will mark his first competitive mount in Britain since 2023. Despite the accident, his management described him as "hopeful" of taking part, suggesting the injuries are not expected to derail his comeback. A successful return would add another chapter to his storied career, which includes more than 4,000 wins worldwide.

Cambridgeshire Police said an investigation into possible traffic offences is ongoing, but no arrests have been made. H Talent Management asked the public to respect Dettori’s privacy while he continues recovery and further scans. The jockey’s focus now is on regaining full strength, a process that could take several weeks. Fans can look forward to updates as he approaches the Leger Legends meeting, where his presence will be closely watched by the racing community.

With the Leger Legends race still months away, Dettori’s immediate calendar is light. He will likely miss any remaining summer meetings, but his long‑term plan appears unchanged. The jockey’s team will monitor his progress and decide on any additional rides based on medical advice. For now, the priority is a steady recovery, and the racing world awaits his return to the saddle.
