Gabriel Bortoleto admits only one scenario could end his friendship with Verstappen
Gabriel Bortoleto has made it clear: only one scenario could alter his friendship with Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion.
Speaking to Automoto.it ahead of the British Grand Prix, the Sauber driver said their close bond would face its toughest test if they ever battled for a championship together. The two have raced alongside each other for two seasons, yet their on-track battles have rarely overlapped. But Bortoleto knows that would change if the title fight ever arrived.
The Brazilian called Verstappen a friend first, not just a rival. He pointed out they’ve rarely fought for the same result over the past two seasons. That dynamic, though, would shift in a title chase.
“Max is a friend of mine,” Bortoleto said. “On track we’ve never really been fighting for the same result, apart from a couple of occasions. When you’re battling for a world championship, things become much more difficult. He probably wouldn’t help me the way he does now.”
Their friendship stretches back years, long before both reached Formula 1. Bortoleto praised Verstappen for his generosity off-track, calling him someone who’s always ready with advice. Even now, he sees the Dutchman as someone he’d happily share a meal or a drink with after a long weekend.
“For the time being, I can still see him as a friend,” Bortoleto added. “Someone I can go out for a drink or grab something to eat with when we’re back home.”
Bortoleto is in his second F1 season, his first since Audi completed its rebranding of Sauber. He’s still learning the ropes of a midfield team while pushing for points. Verstappen, meanwhile, remains the benchmark for pace and consistency.
The Brazilian’s comments come as he navigates a season where every point counts. His ability to stay close to Verstappen’s level could define his growth in the sport.
He’ll return to the track for the next race, aiming to close the gap to the front runners. The question now is whether their friendship can survive the pressure of a future title fight.
For now, Bortoleto insists the bond remains strong. But he knows the moment either of them truly challenges for a championship, everything changes.
