Gary Anderson advances at 2026 World Matchplay as Van Gerwen, Clayton also progress

Gary Anderson held his nerve to reach the second round of the 2026 World Matchplay in Blackpool on Sunday.

The three-time world champion edged through on Day 2 as part of an all-British quartet-alongside Michael van Gerwen, Jonny Clayton and Gian van Veen-who booked their spots in the last 16.

What happened in Gary Anderson’s first-round match?

Anderson faced a stern test against Jermaine Wattimena in the afternoon session. The Dutchman rattled off a mini-run midway through the second set, but Anderson dug deep to regain control.

A vital break of throw in the final leg of session two sealed a 6-4 victory for Anderson, sending him through to face either Luke Humphries or Ross Smith next.

Why it matters for Gary Anderson

At 46, Anderson remains one of darts’ most feared hitters, even if his consistency has dipped in recent years. His progress keeps alive the hope of a deep run in Blackpool, where he’s a former winner.

The Scot joins Van Gerwen-who eased past Berry van Peer-and Clayton, who saw off Danny Noppert, in the next round. Only eight seeds remain after Day 2, with big names like Michael Smith and Luke Littler already gone.

What comes next for Anderson?

Anderson will return to the Winter Gardens on Monday for his second-round clash. The draw pits him against either world No. 1 Humphries or Smith, who both won on Sunday.

A win would set up a blockbuster quarter-final against Van Gerwen or Clayton, both of whom are in imperious form. Anderson’s path grows tougher, but his experience in pressure spots could swing things his way.

2026 World Matchplay second-round draw in full

Eight second-round ties remain, all best-of-19. The full bracket is live now, with the quarter-finals set for Tuesday.

Van Gerwen, the two-time champion, eyes another title defense. Clayton, meanwhile, looks to extend his own hot streak. Anderson’s challenge? Prove he’s still a threat in darts’ biggest showpiece.
