George Best’s son Calum leads world-first marathon challenge in Samoa
Calum Best, son of the late football legend George Best, will participate in a groundbreaking endurance challenge on July 25, running two marathons in two countries on the same day. The event, known as the Chasing Yesterday Marathons, begins in Samoa and continues in American Samoa after crossing the International Date Line, symbolizing a wish to change painful childhood experiences.
What is the Chasing Yesterday Marathons challenge?
The challenge involves four runners completing a 42.2-kilometre marathon in Samoa before flying to American Samoa. By crossing the International Date Line, they effectively travel back in time and run a second marathon on what is technically the previous day. The event aims to raise funds and awareness for children affected by parental alcohol abuse.
Why is Calum Best participating?
Calum Best, a patron of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa), has a personal connection to the cause. His father, George Best, was a football legend known for his struggles with alcohol. Calum has spoken openly about the impact of alcoholism on his family and is committed to supporting children facing similar challenges.
Who else is involved?
Joining Calum Best are wellbeing influencer and Nacoa ambassador Josh Connolly, sports commentator and journalist Ian Stringer, and endurance athlete Scott Murdoch. Connolly, who witnessed his father's overdose at nine years old, said the challenge carries deep personal meaning. "I wish I could go back in time and help that hurt young boy," he said.
What is the goal of the event?
The event aims to raise £100,000 through sponsorships and donations. The funds will be used to expand school outreach programmes, train teachers to recognise signs of distress, and provide earlier support for children affected by parental alcohol abuse. Nacoa estimates millions of people in the United Kingdom have been affected by a parent's drinking, with many children continuing to suffer in silence.
